English Question
Editorial Assignment
4 paragraphs
Webster’s Dictionary defines an editorial as “a newspaper or magazine article that gives
the opinions of the editors or publishers also : an expression of opinion that resembles such an
article.” Editorials are persuasive pieces of writing that require taking a stance on a debatable
issue, collecting evidence to prove your stance, and acknowledging the opposition. Editorials
are subjective opinion pieces. Therefore, first person may be used throughout the essay, but
the writing still needs to be formal and measured.
Your goal for this essay is to write an editorial of your own. You can choose any subject
that is debatable. You need to research this topic, and you must include at least one of these
sources in your final essay. You need to write at least four paragraphs. Remember, a good
argumentative essay includes an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Editorials are
no different. Also, strong editorials usually will provide a solution to the problem or will call for
action. The overall idea is that you much relay your opinion to the reader, but you still are
backing it up with legitimate evidence.
